General Keywords - Replace them with Long Tail Keywords For Best Results
When you are thinking about website promotion, it might seem like a good idea to use general keywords that get the most traffic. You'll write an article or create a blog with your keywords in the title and description, but you won't get any traffic. Why not? General keywords take forever (if even then) to get to the first page of Google and get any traffic.
It's no secret that you pretty much have to be on the first page of the search results to get any traffic and make sales. I've had numerous websites lingering around page two and three and it wasn't until they hit page one that I saw a skyrocketing of traffic occur.
So, I use a good strategy. Go after some good long tail keywords first and then you can build on ranking your website for general keywords in your spare time. This has several advantages to starting with generals. Long tail keywords are generally pretty easy to get to the first page of Google. So, when you target them first, you will instantly see some traffic to your website and you will get excited and keep working on it. Pretty soon you have several long tail keywords ranking on the first page of Google and you are seeing great amounts of traffic each day and are making sales/money. Which is awesome!
Try it the other way. Try to rank your website for general keywords first and get your site infront of thousands of visitors a day. You check your rankings everyday and after a few days of not seeing your website anywhere, you'll get discouraged and stop working on it. It takes a long time and a lot of link building to get to page one of the search results with general keywords. Plus, even when you do get there, your product is not going to be for everyone searching for it using general terms. By using long tail keywords, you will be sending highly targeted traffic relevant to your website. Traffic that converts to sales.
What should you use to target this traffic? Well, articles are good, videos are good, free web 2.0 blogs work great and anything else you can think of. Just do your keyword research and pick the best long tail keywords to get the most targeted traffic possible to your website.
